Preparations are underway in Lighthouse Point for potential landfall of Hurricane Dorian

City officials are taking steps to secure Lighthouse Point in anticipation of Hurricane Dorian. The latest update from the National Hurricane Center has Dorian strengthening with the potential of nearing Category 4 strength as it makes landfall on Florida’s east coast this weekend. Florida is now under a state of emergency.

All Lighthouse Point city facilities and services are operating normally and will continue through Friday afternoon.

While the storm is still days away, and its path is uncertain, we are taking every action we can to prepare the City and keep our residents safe.

Residents should be aware that there is an 80% chance of tropical force winds, and a potential for hurricane force winds and heavy rainfall, which may lead to possible localized flooding.

Keeping all storm water drains clear will be a priority.

Normal scheduled waste collection will continue for household waste through your normally scheduled collection day. Waste collection pick up early next week may be altered depending on the effects of Hurricane Dorian. There will be no bulk or waste collection on Saturday or Sunday.

Following your normal waste collection pickup:

  • Do not place any bulk pickup out for collection. It will not be picked up. Doing so will put your property and that of your neighbors at risk.
  • Do Not do any major yard work until after the storm passes.
  • Do Not place any debris at the curb until the storm has cleared.
  • Keep in mind that large piles of new vegetation trimming may clog storm drains.
By avoiding the placement of large piles of bulk material, yard waste and vegetation trimmings after your normal collection day, you will help keep storm drains clean to minimize flooding, and prevent flying debris to avoid unnecessary damage.

We urge all residents to make the necessary preparations now!
This is a good time to check your supplies, take precautions and review your hurricane plan. We encourage everyone to monitor the situation and stay informed.

The Police Department will be providing regular NIXLE emergency notifications before, during and after the storm, to keep you posted on important neighborhood information. Please encourage your friends and neighbors in Lighthouse Point to sign up now for NIXLE.

STAY SAFE!
