Advisory

The Lighthouse Point Police Department is issuing a warning to residents regarding a phone scam.

Telephonic Scams

Persons purporting to be Law Enforcement Officials have been calling residents throughout Broward County, and attempting to perpetrate a scam.  In some cases, the calls appeared to originate from the Lighthouse Point Police Department – (954)942-8080 and were targeted at Lighthouse Point Residents .  Perpetrators are utilizing an electronic technique known as “spoofing” to trick the Caller ID system into displaying whatever number the perpetrator desires.

The perpetrator may ask for personally identifying information (social security, bank numbers, etc.), and they may demand payment in lieu of arrest.  Payment methods requested are usually non-traditional and may include gift cards, PayPal, or wire transfers.

The Lighthouse Point Police Department only accepts payment for services at the Police Department.

Here are a few tips to avoid falling victim to a phone scam:

  • If you receive a suspicious telephone call that appears to originate from the Lighthouse Point Police Department, hang up and call the non-emergency number at 954-942-8080.  This is the quickest method to determine if the Police Department is trying to reach you.
  • DO NOT provide any personally identifying information over the telephone unless you are absolutely positive that you know the telephone call to be legitimate.

If you believe that you are a victim of any scam, please contact the Lighthouse Point Police Department at 954-942-8080.
