Update: Fire Under Control - AFD Units on Location Brush Fire at Service High School

At 6:49 P.M., AFD dispatch received a 911 call reporting a 50 foot brush fire igniting black spruce trees in the woods near the hockey rinks at Service High School. The first AFD units arrived on location within five minutes and the fire was reported as 100 foot x 50 foot in diameter, creeping in vegetation with black spruce trees on fire. Twelve AFD fire apparatus, command, and support units responded, and a Division of Forestry Helitak was requested to assist as well.

Crews were able to quickly flank the fire and keep it from spreading. The fire was declared under control at 7:46 P.M. and had stopped growing at 100 feet by 100 feet in diameter. Crews will be remaining on location containing the fire and mopping up hot spots. No damage to school property or injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

This is a reminder that while the strong winds affecting the Municipality of Anchorage over the weekend have dissipated, the vegetation and trees are very dry and our community remains in a very high wildfire danger situation. It will take a considerable amount of wetting rain over an extended period of time for this to change for the better. The Burn Ban remains in effect.
