San Bernardino Sheriff's Aviation rescues injured hiker from Mt. Baldy

VICTIM(S): Maria Martinez, 30, Rancho Cucamonga, CA
SUMMARY:
On Saturday, August 17, 2019, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Sheriff’s Aviation was requested by San Bernardino County Fire, reference an injured hiker in the Mount Baldy area. Sheriff’s patrol helicopter, 40King6, responded to the area and began a search for the victim. The victim also activated her GPS Spot device which sent a location to the Office of Emergency Services. That information was given to Sheriff’s Aviation and was helpful in locating the victim. Once 40King6 arrived in the area, the crew located the injured hiker at approximately the 9,000 foot level. Due to the location and terrain 40King6 requested Sheriff’s Air Rescue 306 to perform a hoist rescue.
Air Rescue 306 arrived in the area and lowered a medic to contact the victim. Once the medic was on the ground, he advised Air Rescue 306 the injured hiker had an injury to her ankle. The medic placed the victim into a rescue harness and Air Rescue 306 hovered above the victim and hoisted her to the helicopter followed by the medic. The victim had non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a waiting ambulance.
