Crime Alert Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 07-29-19 at 3:03 a.m., a 27-year old transient subject was arrested for being intoxicated in public and providing a false name to police. This occurred on the unit block of Oliver Street, following a report of a suspicious person yelling in the street for two hours.

On Monday, 07-29-19 at 12:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Santa Cruz Avenue on a report of a man with a gun. The reporting party said the subject pointed a firearm at him during an argument. Officers responded and gave commands via a loud speaker for the subject to walk out of the house. The subject complied, and officers detained him. The subject, a 40-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. The officers retrieved the firearm, as well as other firearms, and booked them for safekeeping. A Judge granted an emergency protective order for the 43-year old reporting party/victim, the suspect’s neighbor.

On Wednesday, 07-31-19 at 12:14 a.m., Officer Tualaulelei was on patrol in the area of Evergreen Avenue and Brunswick Street and saw a black 2011 Lincoln Town car that he remembered hearing in briefing that evening about it being stolen. The officer confirmed with dispatchers that the vehicle was stolen, and he tried to conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle. The driver failed to yield, and a short pursuit ensued. The pursuit was terminated due to safety reasons, and officers canvassed the area for the driver of the vehicle. Officers found the vehicle still running at the dead of Peoria Street. A bystander pointed out to the officers where they saw the driver run. Officer Lizana found the subject at Wellington Avenue and Winchester Street. The subject, a 26-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for vehicle theft, evading police, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

On Wednesday, 07-31-19 at approximately 2:00 p.m., an unknown subject stole a 2017 Toyota Corolla from the City Toyota parking lot. The vehicle was in the process of being detailed, and the keys were inside the vehicle. The following day, the subject came back to the Toyota lot and admitted to stealing the vehicle. The suspect, a 46-year old transient, said he was feeling suicidal with all the thoughts he was going through and threatened to hurt himself. Officer Gregorio transported the subject to Peninsula Hospital for a medical evaluation and psychiatric hold. The suspect will later be charged with vehicle theft, an outstanding warrant, and a parole hold form the Department of Corrections.

On Wednesday, 07-31-19 at approximately 7:36 p.m., Officer Lajoie was dispatched to an apartment on the 300 block of Park Plaza Drive on the report of a female who overdosed on fentanyl. The officer met with the reporting party who said her friend had been smoking fentanyl prior to becoming unconscious and pointed to a coffee table that had a small white substance on it near a piece of foil. The Daly City Fire Department was on scene monitoring the subject, a 44-year old San Carlos resident. The subject refused to be taken to the hospital for further evaluation. This case will be sent to the District Attorney’s Office for a complaint.

On Wednesday, 07-31-19 at 10:24 p.m., Officer Lizana was on patrol in the area of MacDonald Avenue and Allan Street and saw a bicyclist driving without headlights. The Officer stopped the bicyclist and explained why he stopped him. Officer Tualaulelei responded to assist. Officer Lizana asked the subject if he had anything illegal on his person, and the subject said he did not and gave consent for the officers to search his belongings. The subject then admitted to having crystal methamphetamine in his pocket. The officers also found a glass pipe used to smoke methamphetamine in the subject’s pocket. The officers also found a suitable amount of methamphetamine—enough to distribute. The officers subsequently arrested the 36-year old San Francisco resident for possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia. While the deputy at the jail was processing the subject, he found a folded dollar bill that contained crystal methamphetamine. The charge of bringing a controlled substance into jail was added to the subject’s list of offenses.

On Thursday, 08-01-19 at 6:03 p.m., a 27-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs after he was involved in a crash with four other vehicles in the area of Como Avenue and Hillside Boulevard. The suspect was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.

On Friday, 08-02-19 at 11:20 a.m., a 70-year old Daly City resident was the victim of an elder abuse by her 32-year old son who pushed her and grabbed her neck. This occurred on the 400 block of Lakeshire Drive. The subject was arrested for elder abuse and for a probation violation.

On Saturday, 08-03-19 at 3:55 p.m., Officers were dispatched to the area of the Century Theaters on a report of a male subject possibly assaulting a female inside a silver Ford Explorer. Officers found the subjects in the vehicle on the 100 block of Vale Street. The male subject, a 32-year old Pittsburg resident, was ultimately arrested for driving under the influence of narcotics and driving without a license.

On Sunday, 08-04-19 at 10:56 p.m., subsequent to a traffic stop by Officer Cain on the 500 block of Clarinada Avenue, a 27-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Monday, 08-05-19 at 6:15 p.m., a 22-year old Daly City resident was arrested for embezzlement after he was seen on camera stealing money from the cash register at his work place—the 7/11 gas station on Bayshore Boulevard.

I neglected to mention in last week’s bulletin about the manhunt on Wednesday, 07-24-19. At 2:56 p.m. that day, Officer Grogan conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at Eastmoor Avenue and Sullivan Avenue. After Officer Grogan got off his motorcycle, he said the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, driving by Officer Lajoie who was up the street. Officer Lajoie witnessed the vehicle crash at Eastmoor Avenue and Ocean Grove Avenue, and the two occupants bailed on foot. The dispatchers advised that the vehicle was involved in an armed carjacking in San Francisco. Officers set up a perimeter, but the suspects had already fled the area. The suspects were later seen hiding in Broadmoor, off of Larchmont Drive, and another perimeter was set. An extensive search for the suspects was conducted, utilizing our K-9 and other officers, Broadmoor Police, the San Mateo County Gang Task Force, Colma Police, a CHP helicopter and San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department. Approximately an hour later, the suspects were seen attempting to leave a hillside area. Another perimeter was set up, and officers found one suspect, a 22-year old San Francisco resident, as he was hiding in thick brush on Macarthur Drive. The search continued for a few more hours, and San Jose P.D.’s helicopter assisted until the second suspect, a 24-year old San Francisco resident, was located in a backyard on Nimitz Drive. San Francisco P.D. responded to interview the suspects. The 22-year old suspect was booked for receiving stolen property, hit and run, and resisting/obstructing a police officer. The 24-year old suspect was arrested for resisting/obstructing a police officer, possession of an imitation firearm and for a parole violation. Some residents in the area received phone messages to shelter in place, and we thank everyone for their cooperation. Scams/Other

Internship Scam

A 22-year old Daly City resident reported that he received an email in his San Francisco State University email about an internship/assistant opportunity. The reporting party thought the email was from a SFSU employee. The reporting party said he was told he would be paid $600 weekly, and all he needed to do was run errands and pick up mail for his employer who was out of town on vacation. The reporting party said he had to send a copy of his identification, phone number and date of birth. The reporting party said he was sent a check for $2,231.33 and was supposed to leave $600 in his account and use the rest of the money for errands and other expenses. The reporting party was then told to transfer the remaining $1,731 to a foster home for charitable purchases. The reporting party did as was told. Later in the day, the reporting party checked his bank account and found that it was in the negative. The bank advised that the check was fraudulent.

Social Security and PG&E calls

I have reported on both of these on numerous occasions, and I would say this is on the rise. Yesterday I received three calls on my cellular phone from all over the country. I let them all go to voicemail, and on each one, a computerized male voice left me a message saying my social security number was compromised and to “press one” if I would like to know about it.

Both of these types of calls from people representing themselves as agents of the Social Security Administration and/or PG&E and who are advising you that you need to pay them to avoid arrest or a threat to shut off power are PHONY and are a HOAX to try to get your hard earned money. Please spread the word to your friends, co-worker and family that this is occurring. You can always call the Social Security Administration or PG&E to verify the assertion that your account has been compromised.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
