The City of San Mateo is recruiting for a new Police Chief and would like our community’s input on what kind of leader we should hire for this important role. Your feedback will help inform the recruitment process, including what the City will look for and what questions candidates are asked.

The Police Department is committed to improving the quality of life in San Mateo by recognizing community needs, forming partnerships, and working with allied agencies to ensure long-term resolutions to crime and disorder issues. The San Mateo Police Department is a 24/7, comprehensive community policing department divided into three service units: Field Operations Services, Investigation Services, and Support Services. The police chief is responsible for overseeing the Police Department, which has about 177 full-time employees and a $44 million budget. The Police Chief is hired by and reports to the City Manager.
