Crime Alert Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 07-22-19 at 6:43 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Exxon Station on Callan Boulevard on a report of a dispute between two subjects—one of whom was carrying a tire iron in both hands. Officer Covarrubias arrived and saw two subjects arguing, and one subject holding a tire iron. The officer gave the subjects numerous verbal commands to drop the tire iron, and the subject complied. The officer immediately placed the subject in handcuffs. The other subject said he went into the gas station and saw a man who was continuously cursing and screaming while other children were present with their mothers. The subject said he approached the man who was cursing and told him to be respectful in front of the kids. The subject said the man then became enraged and challenged him to a fight. The subject said they went outside, and the other subject picked up a pair of scissors and was holding them in a threatening manner. The subject told him to put down the scissors, and they would fight. The man with the scissors put the scissors down, walked to the trunk of his car and came back with two tire irons. The man began swinging the tire irons, so the other subject picked up the scissors in case he had to defend himself. The man put one tire iron down and they argued until the police arrived. The subject with the tire iron, a 38-year old Daly City resident, was then arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, a parole violation and possession of drug paraphernalia (pipe).

On Tuesday, 07-23-19 at 5:55 p.m., Officer Jackson-Berrios was dispatched to parking lot of the Joe’s of Westlake restaurant on a report of two subjects trying to break into the victim’s vehicle while the victim was sitting in it. The victim opened the door and asked what the subject was doing, and the victim said the subject ran off and got into a vehicle. The victim provided a partial license plate of the vehicle, and Officer Taylor was able to determine the identification of the vehicle. The victim said the subject took a leather Coach backpack containing candy, an iPad Pro, Apple pen, paperwork, prescription glasses, keys and a blood sugar monitor. Officer Jackson-Berrios also located three other vehicles that were burglarized in the parking lot. At approximately 10:00 p.m. that evening, the San Francisco P.D. had detained two subjects after they were seen casing cars using the same vehicle that was seen at Joe’s of Westlake. Officer Covarrubias and Officer Lizana responded to the 1200 block of 3rd St in San Francisco and placed the two subjects under arrest and transported them back to the station for questioning. The officers searched the suspect vehicle and found multiple electronics and other items inside the vehicle. The suspects, a 30-year old Hayward resident and a 26-year old Antioch resident, were placed under arrest for auto burglary, possession of burglary tools, possession of stolen items, and conspiracy to commit a crime. The 30-year old Hayward resident was also charged with possession of ammunition as a prohibited person.

On Thursday, 07-25-19 at 10:38 p.m., Officer Shoopman was dispatched on a call to assist San Francisco P.D. on a robbery that occurred in San Francisco. The victim said the suspects were possibly in our City and gave a description of the suspects. Officer Shoopman arrived to find out the crime actually occurred at the intersection of Geneva Avenue and Castillo Street. The victim, a 56-year old San Francisco resident, said she got off the MUNI bus and began walking home east on Geneva Avenue towards Pueblo Street with a tote bag when she said two subjects approached her from behind and grabbed her bag. The victim let go of the bag containing medication, cash, credit cards, keys and a wallet. The victim described the first suspect as a black male adult, 6’2”, medium build, thin face, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. The suspect may have had a scar or mark on the left side of his face. The victim described the second suspect as a black male, 5’10”, medium build, wearing a dark blue jacket and dark jeans. Officer Shoopman and other officers could not find the suspects. This investigation is continuing.

On Friday, 07-26-19 at 11:00 a.m., Officer Gill was dispatched to the Jollibee restaurant on a report of an intoxicated subject who urinated inside the restaurant. The officer found the subject, a 32-year old Hayward resident, drinking from a bottle of vodka on the sidewalk near the restaurant. The subject was arrested for public intoxication and for a parole violation.

On Sunday, 07-28-19 at 5:38 a.m., two 38-year old Daly City residents reported that they were the victims of an indecent exposure by a subject who “flashed” at them when they were at the track area of the grass field at Gellert Park. The victims described the suspect as a light skinned male, possibly Hispanic, 5’8”-5’9” with a beer belly and wearing a blue hooded robe. The officers checked the area but could not find the suspect.

On Sunday, 07-28-19 at 12:42 p.m., Officer Hightower and Officer Jackson were dispatched to the area of John Daly Boulevard and Junipero Serra Boulevard on a report of a man wearing a yellow jacket walking into traffic. The officers located the subject who could not stand unassisted and whose eyes were drooping and closing throughout contact. The subject allowed the officers to search his backpack, and they found multiple credit/debit cards not belonging to the subject. There were also multiple capped syringes in the backpack. The subject, a 30-year old transient, exhibited signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance. The officer conducted some tests to see if the subject was under the influence, and the subject failed the tests. The subject admitted to using both heroin and methamphetamine. The subject was booked into jail, and the staff at the jail found a plastic bag containing methamphetamine in the subject’s anal cavity during a pre-booking cavity search. The subject was also charged with bringing a controlled substance into Jail.

Scams/Other

Social Security Phone Call

This hasn’t turned into a scam per se, but a 55-year old resident said on Saturday, 07-25-19, she received a call from a subject who identified himself as a representative for the Social Security Administration. The reporting party was expecting a call from the agency regarding her daughter, and she did not think anything was suspicious of the call. The caller asked the reporting party for her social security number, and the reporting party gave it to the caller. The caller then asked the reporting party for her name, and the reporting party grew suspicious and asked why the caller need the information. The reporting party said the caller hung up the phone. The reporting party called the number again to inquire why she was asked for her information, and the subject once again hung up the phone. The officer advised the reporting party to contact the various credit agencies (TransUnion, Equifax and Experian) to freeze the accounts.

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t live there.
