Sachse PD partners with RING

A message from Chief Bryan Sylvester:

The Sachse Police Department is proud to announce that we have partnered with RING, a national home security camera provider, to enhance our current Neighborhood Video Partnership Program. Currently, every RING camera owner has access to the RING “Neighbors” app. This app allows RING owners to interact with one another to share information regarding activities captured on their RING devices. This program also has the capability to allow local law enforcement to share important updates as it pertains to crime and safety in order to make our neighborhoods safer.

Through our partnership with RING, The police department will now be able to send messaging thru the app to RING owners. The primary messaging content will be to request that RING owners check their video for crime related video footage. The department has the ability to limit this messaging to only the geographic area related to the incident so as not to inconvenience other citizens with non-applicable messaging.

The Neighbors app allows us to see the same interface that all users see; the content is the same, the exact locations of posts are obscured, and the user’s personal identity is not displayed. There are two key differences however: 1) The police department can view public posts from within the entire city (instead of just their ‘neighborhood’) and 2) Any posts that the police department makes are clearly identified as coming from the Sachse Police Department, so users can see that we are the source of the content.

The police department cannot directly access any person’s RING device, recording or email address. Should an owner decide to send video footage to us thru the Neighbor’s app, only then would their email address be known to us.

For those that may not wish to receive messaging from the department, there is a feature within the app that allows users to opt out of law enforcement messaging.

I believe that this enhancement to our existing video partnership program will better enable us to partner with and serve our citizens, to keep Sachse safe and help maintain our outstanding quality of life.
