Excessive Heat Warning for Carlstadt

HEAT ADVISORY

The National Weather Service has issued a HEAT ADVISORY for our area from noon today, Friday, July 19, 2019 until 8:00 pm on Sunday, July 21, 2019 and could possibly be extended even longer.  The advisory is as follows:

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 8 PM EDT SUNDAY... * HEAT INDEX VALUES...AROUND 105 TO 110 TODAY AND AROUND 105 TO 115 SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. * TIMING...12 PM TODAY THROUGH 8 PM SUNDAY. * IMPACTS...EXTREME HEAT CAN CAUSE ILLNESS AND DEATH AMONG AT- RISK POPULATION WHO CANNOT STAY COOL. THE EXCESSIVE HEAT MAY QUICKLY CAUSE HEAT STRESS OR HEAT STROKE. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN THE COMBINATION OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY IS EXPECTED TO MAKE IT FEEL LIKE IT IS 105 DEGREES OR GREATER. TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN POSSIBLE, RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE-FITTING CLOTHING WHEN POSSIBLE, AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. SENIORS AND THOSE WITH CHRONIC HEALTH PROBLEMS OR MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS ARE AT INCREASED RISK. HOMES WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING CAN BE MUCH HOTTER THAN OUTDOORS. USE AIR CONDITIONING TO STAY COOL AT HOME OR GO TO A PLACE THAT HAS AIR CONDITIONING. CHECK ON VULNERABLE FRIENDS, FAMILY MEMBERS AND NEIGHBORS. TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK, THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS IN SHADED OR AIR-CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY! IN CASES OF HEAT STROKE CALL 9 1 1.
Extreme Heat often results in the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards. In most of the United States, extreme heat is defined as a long period (2 to 3 days) of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees. In extreme heat, evaporation is slowed, and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. This can lead to death by overworking the human body.

IF YOU ARE UNDER AN EXTREME HEAT WARNING:

  • Find air conditioning. Do not use electric fans when the temperature outside is more than 95 degrees, as this could increase the risk of heat-related illness. Fans create air flow and a false sense of comfort, but do not reduce body temperature.
  • Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Watch for heat illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Seek medical attention or call 9-1-1 if you, a family member or neighbor are experiencing one of these
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  •  Check on family members and neighbors, particularly those who are elderly and handicapped. Make sure they are keeping as cool as possible and drinking plenty of water.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. If you or someone you care for is on a special diet, ask a doctor how best to accommodate it. Also, alcoholic beverages, while refreshing, can cause dehydration and lead to a heat related illness.
  • Never leave a child, adult, or animal alone inside a vehicle.

RECOGNIZE AND RESPOND

Know the signs of heat-related illness and the ways to respond to it:

HEAT CRAMPS
  • Signs: Muscle pains or spasms in the stomach, arms, or legs
  • Actions: Go to a cooler location. Remove excess clothing. Take sips of cool sports drinks with salt and sugar. Get medical help if cramps last more than an hour.

HEAT EXHAUSTION
  • Signs: Heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, or fainting
  • Actions: Go to an air-conditioned place and lie down. Loosen or remove clothing. Take a cool bath. Take sips of cool sports drinks with salt and sugar. Get medical help if symptoms get worse or last more than an hour.

HEAT STROKE
  • Signs: Extremely high body temperature (above 103 degrees) taken orally; red, hot, and dry skin with no sweat; rapid, strong pulse; dizziness; confusion; or unconsciousness
  • Actions: Call 911 or get the person to a hospital immediately. Cool down with whatever methods are available until medical help arrives.

Due to this heat advisory, the Carlstadt Office of Emergency Management will be opening and operating an Emergency Shelter / Cooling Center at the Civic Center located on Fourth Street.

Remember if your hot, so is your pet, so keep them cool and hydrated as well.

Please remain safe during this time of high heat. Check on elderly or handicapped neighbors.  Most importantly, stay cool and drink a lot of water to keep hydrated.
