Boating Safety Tips going into the 4th of July and Fireworks Celebration

It is expected to be another busy weekend on the Fox River in the city of Green Bay. We are reminding all boaters to be safe, know the navigational rules, and be courteous of other boaters. One of the most common violations are the “Right of Way” and the posted “No Wake” zones.

Any unnecessary wake can create hazards to other boaters, docks, moored vessels, construction/ dredging equipment, wildlife and even those on shore. The attached photo outlines the designated areas for “no wake.” We encourage all boaters to follow these rules as the GBPD Marine Unit will be patrolling throughout the holiday and all weekends to ensure compliance.

Also, the Marine unit wants to remind all boaters about the mooring rules for the holiday. City Deck will be have designated “No Parking” areas specifically for the Waterboard Warriors Ski Show. We want to remind all boaters to adhere to these mooring restrictions. Other portions of city deck will be available for mooring. At the conclusion of the show, the entire city deck will available for all boats. Please know these areas will be affected by the wakes/waves caused by the boats.

During the fireworks show, there will be an established “safety zone” for the fireworks that no boats will be allowed to be in. The Marine Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard will be enforcing this zone. Generally, boaters will not be able to be anchored anywhere on the river from the main street bridge to the north to the east river. Please see the below city ordinance for docking along city property. We will be on the river educating all boaters and ensuring the safety of all people on the water.

9.52 VESSEL DOCKING ALONG SIDE CITY PROPERTY.
(1) No person shall dock any boat or other vessel at any City-owned property abutting any body of water within the corporate limits of the City except in conformity with regulations regarding docking at facilities created for such purpose or, where such facilities do not exist, by permit issued by the Director of Public Works or his designee.

The 4th of July festivities are held for everyone so the Green Bay Police Department’s Marine Unit encourages everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
