What are "Safe and Sane" Fireworks? Learn More and Get Some 4th of July Safety Tips

What is “Safe and Sane?”

4th of July and fireworks go hand in hand. However, fireworks can be dangerous if they are misused and even more dangerous if not purchased from a “Safe and Sane” vendor. “Safe and Sane” was a term that became popular in the 1960’s to describe a type, not a brand of firework that is not a projectile or explosive. Other dangerous fireworks include rockets, aerial missiles or spinners, roman candles and are not considered “Safe and Sane.” These types of fireworks are more likely to get you injured, cause property damage, and fined up to $1,000 or arrested. Look for the “Safe and Sane” seal on any fireworks you intend to purchase. There are 15 vendors from non-profit organizations selling fireworks in Montebello. All of these vendors are only selling “Safe and Sane” fireworks and have been inspected by the Montebello Fire Department.

Remember that any fireworks can be dangerous if not used properly. Recent years have resulted in several fireworks related fires including one that killed several horses. Another Montebello community member severely injured his hand last year using illegal fireworks. Please remember the following tips so we can all “Celebrate Safely” this 4th of July.

  • Never use illegal fireworks
  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks
  • Older children should use them only under close adult supervision
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire
  • Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eye wear
  • Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands
  • Never light them indoors
  • Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person
  • Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting
  • Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks
  • Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding
