Lieutenant Beguhn

At approximately 7:11 PM the Green Bay Police Department and Green Bay Metro Fire Department responded to a fire in the 1600 BLK of Cofrin DR. A semi caught fire that ran on compressed natural gas.

As the fire engulfed the semi, the compressed natural gas tanks exploded causing small explosions. The small explosions were most likely from the relief valves on the natural gas tanks and or the tires.
As a result, the surrounding neighborhood was evacuated. Officers went door to door evacuating residents while the fire department attended to the fire.

Cofrin Dr between Radisson to Elizabeth is closed. There are several other streets closed and we are asking drivers to avoid this area. There are also several city blocks that have been evacuated. GBMFD will be on scene while they control the fire.

Officers will be on scene until the conclusion of the fire. Once GBMFD personnel deem the area safe, officers will make the notification that the area is safe. The cause of the fire is not known at this time. Once the scene is clear, the department will send out another release.
