We have been urging parents/guardians to discuss bike laws with their kids. We have provided warnings through school assemblies and letters. Unfortunately, to keep our children and the motoring public safe, we may need to move to enforcement options due to the illegal and unsafe behavior continuing throughout our Township.  

Here is a detailed list of the efforts of our Department thus far:

• A letter was sent emphasizing bike safety through our partners at Voorhees Public Schools.  Information received from our Patrol Bureau identified the actors as primarily being middle school aged offenders.  This letter was distributed by the Voorhees School District to parents advising them of our goal to keep kids actively riding their bikes, but to have them do so in a safe manner.  The letter encouraged parent involvement in order to deter the behavior in hopes that writing summonses could be prevented.  The letter also provided resources contained on the New Jersey State website which provided bike safety tips and laws pertaining to pedalcyclist safety.
• Shortly after the letter, assemblies were held at the Voorhees Middle School targeting bike safety with the student body.  A three hour assembly was held in order to address the entire student body in the middle school.  It also touched on topics such as internet safety.  
• Additional bike safety assemblies were completed at Osage, Signal Hill, Kresson, and Hamilton schools.

Please have the conversation with your children and check up on them periodically while riding their bicycles.  We do not want to write them traffic tickets, but will if we are left no other option.  Several summonses have already been issued to repeat offenders.
