ADIVSORY: Redwood City Police Seize Illegal Fireworks Cache; 3 Suspects Arrested


Suspects:
Jesus Miguel Cuevas, 18, Redwood City Resident (In Custody)
Francisco Alberto Garibay, 21, South San Francisco Resident (Cited and Released)
Jesus Garibay, 22, South San Francisco Resident (Cited and Released)

On June 20, 2019, Detectives with the Redwood City Police Department Street Crimes Suppression Team, in partnership with law enforcement personnel assigned to the San Mateo County Gang Task Force, were conducting investigative follow up related to an earlier call for service in the 3500 block of Hoover Street in Redwood City. While conducting this follow up inside a residence Detectives observed a large cache of illegal fireworks. Multiple subjects attempted to flee the scene but were detained while the investigation continued. Detectives obtained a search warrant and conducted a complete search of the premises, locating and seizing in excess of 1000 pounds of dangerous fireworks. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded to the scene to assist with the collection of the fireworks to ensure their safe-handling, storage and disposal.

Suspect Jesus Miguel Cuevas was arrested for a felony violation of 12700(b)(3) H&S, possession of dangerous fireworks in excess of 100 lbs., and a misdemeanor charge of 12702(a) H&S, sale of dangerous fireworks, and booked into the San Mateo County jail.
Suspects Francisco and Jesus Garibay were each arrested for a misdemeanor violation of 12702(a) H&S, sale of dangerous fireworks, and issued citations.
The Redwood City Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind residents that all fireworks are illegal in Redwood City and present a significant safety hazard. Possession and use of illegal fireworks can carry fines of up to $50,000 and substantial jail time. The quantity and type of fireworks seized in this incident represented a very real public safety hazard to the residents in the area and the Redwood City Police Department is thankful to have them off the streets where they cannot cause harm or property damage.
The Redwood City Police Department would like to thank the San Mateo County Gang Task Force, San Mateo County Gang Intelligence Unit, and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad for their assistance with this investigation.
