Motor Vehicle Accident

On Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at approximately 3:18pm, the South River Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Old Bridge Turnpike and Leonardine Avenue. The accident involved two vehicles, one of which was a New Jersey Transit bus. Upon arrival of police units, at least four injuries were confirmed with one of the injuries being life threatening.

A preliminary investigation revealed the New Jersey Transit bus was traveling north on Old Bridge Turnpike and a gray SUV was traveling south on Old Bridge Turnpike. The driver of the SUV attempted to make a left turn onto Leonardine Avenue in front of the bus causing a head-on collision. As a result of the collision between the two vehicles, the bus subsequently struck the residence of 58 Old Bridge Turnpike.

The driver of the SUV, a 75 year old resident of South River, received medical attention from officers on the scene as well as from Robert Wood Johnson EMT’s and paramedics. He was subsequently transported to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick with life threatening injuries and later pronounced deceased at 3:37am on June 12th. All other injuries were to the occupants of the bus and were deemed to be non-life threatening at the time of the accident.
