Summer May Be on Your Brain - But, Don't Get Lax With Your Driving Habits

The school year may be wrapping up, but don’t get lax with your driving habits! Many schools are offering summer school, some are being used to host day camps and others are providing free meals to youth. In addition, the City's 37 parks, pools and playgrounds will be heavily used in the coming months.

Simple steps to protect pedestrians and bicyclists
• Reduce your speed when traveling through school zones, residential areas, parks and playgrounds. Standard traffic rules for school zones are 25mph within 500-1,000 of a school when children are present
• Expect increased vehicular traffic near parks and schools
• Expect the unexpected – car door swinging open, bicyclist riding against traffic or not in bicycle lane, children darting into the street, etc.
• Be aware of an unusually high concentration of pedestrian crosswalks
• Before making a turn, look every which way (including behind you) for people on foot or bicycles
• Be on the lookout for buses and be sure to stop and remain stopped in both direction of travel when their red lights are flashing, and/or the stop sign is deployed
• Obey crossing guards
• Follow all California Vehicle Code regulations. The Vehicle Code is available at http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codesTOCSelected.xhtml?tocCode=VEH&tocTitle=+Vehicle+Code+-+VEH
• Reminder - California carries higher fines for traffic violations in school zones
