NEW SCAM ALERT: Impersonators trying to steal your social security number. Be aware!

NEW SCAM ALERT!

We have all heard them and possibly even received them. Scam phone calls with someone on the other end of the line claiming to be from the IRS or from a police agency. Now, these scam phone calls are also including the Social Security Administration.

The Advisory Board has reported that individuals are receiving scam phone calls displaying the board’s phone number on caller ID. The callers are reportedly attempting to obtain personal information, including Social Security numbers. The caller informs the person that due to "fraudulent activity using their social security number", the SSA is having to issue the person a new social security card/number.

This is a SCAM.
1. Your SSN will not be suspended.
2. The SSA will never call you and ask you for your SSN.
3. Never give your SSN to anyone who calls you and/or never confirm the last 4 of your SSN to anyone.
4. NEVER send or wire money to anyone contacting you via phone.

If you receive a suspicious call, you may report that information online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report or by calling (800) 269-0271.You can also report these scams to the Federal Trade Commission through a new site specific to Social Security scams: https://identitytheft.gov/ssa.

Be aware and ensure you do not become the victim of a crime!
