Narrative:
On June 2nd 2019 at approximately 4:30 p.m. Amsterdam Police were dispatched to a home on Pulaski Street for a home invasion in progress where a handgun was displayed and allegedly used as an impact weapon to strike one of the residents causing physical injury. The caller reported two suspects fleeing the scene. Responding officers’ arrived at the scene and aided the injured resident while other units began checking the area for the suspects. The initial interview with the victim produced a suspect and all patrols were advised to be on the lookout.

On June 3rd 2019 at approximately 12:54 p.m. while on a call to assist Emergency Medical Personnel Amsterdam Police Patrolmen observed the suspect from the previous day’s home invasion at the scene; the suspect is now identified as 33 year-old Akeem K. Cordes who has a legal address out of Brooklyn, NY.

Uniformed officers attempted to take Cordes into custody during which he pulled away from an officer and led police on a lengthy foot pursuit. More officers were requested to the scene and a perimeter was setup around the suspect’s last known location.

A short time later the suspect was taken into custody inside a residence on Hibbard Street.

Among the officer’s responding were members of the Amsterdam Police/Montgomery County SWAT team who were nearby on a scheduled training day when they heard the call of the foot pursuit go out over the Amsterdam Police frequency.

The original call to assist Emergency Medical Personnel is unrelated to the home invasion investigation. The subsequent foot pursuit and apprehension of the suspect happened contemporaneously to the call to assist Emergency Medical Personnel.
The suspect Akeem K. Cordes was arraigned in Amsterdam City Court in front of Judge William J. Mycek where he was ordered held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 insurance bond.
