TRAFFIC ALERT: Special Olympics Torch Run Tomorrow

Tomorrow, June 7th, between approximately 10:00am and approximately 12:00pm, the 36th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for the NJ Special Olympics will be coming through South River. Motorists should be prepared for possible traffic delays and brief road closures. Drivers are asked to use extra caution and be alert for runners, increased pedestrian traffic and slow moving vehicles.

Streets affected include Old Bridge Turnpike, Kamm Avenue, David Street, Johnson Place, Willett Avenue, Charles Street, Obert Street, Main Street, Hillside Avenue and Milltown Road.

South River Police officers will receive the torch from members of the East Brunswick Police Department at Old Bridge Turnpike and Racetrack Road sometime between 10:00am and 11:00am. Our runners will then proceed through South River and onto Main Street before handing the torch back over to members of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office and East Brunswick Police Department in the area of Milltown Road and Route 18.

If you are interested in cheering the runners on, the best place to do so is along Main Street between Obert Street and Gordon Street as the runners stop briefly for pictures in that area.

Each year more then 3,000 dedicated Law Enforcement officers participate in the NJ Law Enforcement Torch Run. The 26 leg journey carries the New Jersey Special Olympics "Flame of Hope" a distance of nearly 750 miles throughout the Garden State to The College of New Jersey in Ewing, where it ignites the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony of Summer Games.
