INCIDENT: Felony Evading

LOCATION: Baseline Street / Tippecanoe Avenue

SUSPECT: Joseph Johnson, age 36 a resident of Mentone


SUMMARY: On Friday, May 24, 2019, a deputy from the Highland Police Department's Multiple Enforcement Team observed the driver of a silver sedan commit several vehicle code violations. The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop and the driver failed to yield. A vehicle pursuit ensued with the driver fleeing at a high-rate of speed throughout the cities of Highland and San Bernardino. During the pursuit, the driver committed multiple vehicle code violations and drove with no due regard for the public’s safety.

During the chase, the driver pulled to the side of the road, abandoned the vehicle while it was still moving, and fled on foot in attempt to elude deputies. The deputy chased and caught the subject, taking him into custody without further incident.

The driver was identified as Joseph Johnson. Johnson is on active parole through the California Department of Corrections for PC 32 – Accessory to Commit Robbery, Kidnapping, and Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Johnson was transported and booked into the Central Detention Center where he is being held without bail for a Parole Violation and current charges of Evading an Officer.

An investigation to determine if the vehicle Johnson was driving was stolen has been initiated. A search of the vehicle revealed evidence of Sales of a Controlled Substance - Methamphetamine.
