Every month, there are over 300 crimes (UCR Part 1 crimes) occurring in the City of Berkeley.  Below are some of those cases that have occurred over the past few days that involve weapons, violence or incidents that people have asked us about.

Car Stop leads to arrest of felon with gun and drugs
On April 29^th at 11:20 p.m., two officers patrolling together stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the area of San Pablo Avenue and Alcatraz Avenue.  When officers searched the driver and his vehicle, they found a loaded handgun along with 65+ grams of crack cocaine, 8+ grams of base cocaine, 3+ grams of powdered heroin, 2+ grams of black tar heroin, 7+ grams of methamphetamine, 31+ grams of marijuana, two digital scales and over $1000 cash.
 
Investigating further, officers discovered that the handgun had previously been reported stolen from San Diego, CA.
 
The driver (a 52-year-old Richmond man) was consequently arrested on suspicion of being a convicted felon with a firearm, being a convicted felon with ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of stolen property as well as multiple narcotics related offenses.
 
Continuing their narcotics investigation, officers obtained a search warrant for the driver’s home.  When officers searched the driver’s home, they found an additional 188 grams of crack cocaine, 73 grams of base cocaine, 83 grams of heroin, more ammunition and cash.

Car Stop leads to arrest of man with concealed gun
On April 29^th at 11:22 p.m., an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the area of Harmon and Adeline Street.  While speaking with the driver, the officer discovered that the vehicle had false 2019 vehicle registration.  When the officer searched the vehicle, the officer found a loaded handgun wedged between the driver’s seat and front console.
 
The driver (a 28-year-old Oakland man) was arrested on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a concealed firearm, carrying an unregistered firearm and having false vehicle registration.

Street Robbery
On April 30^th at 10:13 p.m., a 33-year-old man was walking on the 1700 block of Virginia Street when two suspects approached him from behind.  One of the suspects grabbed the man and demanded his backpack.  The man tried to run away, but the suspects ran after him.  When the suspects caught up with the man, both suspects began to hit the man’s head.  The suspects pulled the man’s backpack from his back and demanded his cell phone.  After getting the cellphone, the suspects then ran to a nearby vehicle and drove away.  Witnesses described the suspects as Hispanic men, in their 20’s, wearing all black clothing.

Laptop Robbery
On May 1^st at 4:37 p.m., a 29-year-old woman was sitting at a table using her laptop inside Starbucks (2224 Shattuck Avenue) near the front door.  A suspect entered the store, reached over a railing and tried to grab the woman’s laptop from her.  The woman struggled to hold onto her laptop, but the suspect was able to wrestle it away from her.  After getting the laptop, the suspect ran out of the store—last seen running southbound on Shattuck Avenue with a second suspect.  Witnesses described the suspect as a Black male, 14-17 years old, about 5’4” to 5’7” tall, with a thin build, short hair, wearing a gray hooded top, an “Army” colored jacket and light blue jeans.  Witnesses described the other suspect as Black male, about 6’1” tall, with a muscular build, wearing a white hooded top and dark jeans.

Gunfire Reported in area of 62^nd/King Streets
On May 1^st at 6:37 p.m., several officers responded to the area of 62^nd Street and King Street after receiving multiple calls of gunfire in the area.  When officers arrived, they found bullet casings on the ground and that some uninvolved vehicles had been struck by gunfire.  After speaking with several witnesses in the area, it appears that at least two suspects had been shooting at each other—one of the suspects possibly driving in a black car-share-vehicle.

Armed Robbery
On May 2^nd at 12:30 a.m., a group of UC students (4 male students 18-19 years old) were walking on the 2700 block of Channing Way when a car pulled up next to them.  Three male suspects armed with handguns got out of the car and approached the group.  The suspects demanded the group’s property and ended up taking their backpacks and cellphones.  The suspects then drove away—last seen driving west on Channing Way.  Witnesses described three of the suspect as follows:

• Suspect #1: Black male, in his 20’s, with a medium or chubby build, with his hair in dreds, wearing a black beanie cap—armed with a handgun.
• Suspect #2: Black male, in his 20’s, with a thin build, armed with a handgun
• Suspect #3: Black male, wearing dark clothing and armed with a handgun

Armed Robbery
On May 2^nd at 1:43 a.m., a group of UC students (3 male students, 19-21 years old), were walking on the 2900 block of Dwight Way when a car pulled up next to them.  Two male suspects got out of the car and surrounded the group—armed with handguns.  The suspects demanded the group’s property and ended up taking their bags and cell phones.  The suspects then drove away—last seen driving west on Dwight Way.  Witnesses described two of the suspects as follows:

• Suspect #1: Black male, about 5’9” tall, with a hefty build and short dreds, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt—armed with a handgun
• Suspect #2: Black male, in his 20’s, about 5’11” tall, with a skinny build, wearing a black mask on his face.

Street Robbery
On May 3^rd at 5 a.m., a 24-year-old woman was walking on Adeline Street (near Harmon Street) when a vehicle pulled alongside her.  The driver of the vehicle opened his door and told the woman he had a gun and demanded her wallet.  The woman dropped some money on the ground and ran away.  The suspect took the money and left the area.  Witnesses described the suspect as a Black male, in his 40’s, with a salt & pepper goatee/beard, wearing a dark-colored hooded top, driving a yellow/green SUV.

Street Robbery
On May 3^rd at 1 p.m., a 21-year-old woman was walking on College Avenue (near Stuart Street) when two suspect approached her from behind.  While one suspect knocked the woman to the ground, the other suspect grabbed the woman’s cellphone from her hands.  The suspects ran away to a nearby vehicle and drove away.  Witnesses described the suspects as two Black men (unknown clothing), last seen driving away in a silver car.

Car Stop leads to arrest of suspect with a homemade gun
On May 4^th at 11:57 p.m., an officer made a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Sixth Street and University Avenue.  During the traffic stop, the officer found that the vehicle had a license plate from another vehicle.
 
When the officer searched the driver, the officer discovered that the driver had a loaded handgun in his waistband.  Inspecting the handgun further, the officer noted that the firearm was homemade (unregistered, no serial number) from a polymer.  When the officer searched the vehicle, the officer located the upper assembly of an assault rifle, methamphetamine and other weapons.
 
The driver (a 36-year-old Berkeley man) was consequently arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance as well as multiple weapons-related offenses.
 
Continuing the investigation, officers later searched the driver’s home—where they found ammunition, high-capacity rifle magazines as well as another handgun.  The driver was consequently also arrested on suspicion of possessing a high-capacity magazine.

Laptop Robbery
On May 6^th at 9:20 p.m., four masked suspects entered Sack’s Coffee House (2701 College Avenue) and robbed two UC Berkeley students of their laptops.  One of the students (a 21-year-old woman) was injured during the encounter.  After one of the suspects wrestled her laptop away, the suspect ran to his waiting getaway vehicle (parked in front of the coffee shop).  When the woman caught up with the suspect at his vehicle, other suspects pushed the woman to the ground and started kicking her.  The suspects then drove away—last seen driving away east on Derby Street in a maroon or burgundy sedan.
 
Medical personnel treated the woman at the scene for minor injuries.  The woman was able to recover her laptop after the suspect dropped it during the encounter.  The other student (a 19-year-old man) was not injured during the robbery.
 
Witnesses described the suspects as 4 Black males, 18-29 years old, wearing ski masks.

Man arrested after hitting another with a wooden board
On May 6^th at 11:52 p.m., officers responded to the 2400 Bancroft Way for a physical altercation.  At the scene, officers found that a 51-year-old man (no city of residence given) was hit in the head with a wooden board by one suspect and pepper sprayed by a second suspect.  The suspect who hit the man in the head [a 24-year-old man (no city of residence given)] was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
 
The second suspect left the area and was described as a white male, in his 20’s to 30’s, about 5’9” tall, with a medium build and long dreds.
 
The victim was taken to a local hospital to treat his head injury and exposure to pepper spray.

A familiar theme among many of these incidents is the theft of personal electronic devices.  When travelling with your personal electronic device—such as a cell phone or laptop, consider keeping it out of sight when possible.  If you see something that you think is suspicious, be sure to say something by notifying the nearest police agency.
