Today is Cinco de Mayo and for many it is a time for fun and celebration that may involve drinking alcohol.  We would like to remind our community members to celebrate responsibly.  If you’re planning on celebrating with alcohol today, remember that at the end of the night, you need to have a safe and sober ride home.
 
In the rush to prepare for a night out, it’s easy to forget the most important Cinco de Mayo plan of all: designating a sober driver. Some may think they can play it by ear and wait until after the party has started to decide whether they’re "okay to drive." By this point, it’s too late. Going out for a night of drinking without a plan for getting home safely is a recipe for disaster.
 
Your Petaluma Police Officers will be out in force tonight looking for the signs of impaired drivers driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.  We also wants to remind everyone that a “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and marijuana can all be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs.

 We understand the importance of this day to many of our community members, but this does not give anyone an excuse to drink and drive.  There are many options to get home safely that don’t involve driving under the influence.
 
The Office of Traffic Safety’s  DDVIP app is now available for free download on iOS and Android devices. The app offers enhanced features, allowing users to search all participating bars and restaurants throughout California. Additionally, the app users can easily order a sober ride from Uber or Lyft.
