Advisory

Catalytic Converter Thefts

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has responded to a series of stolen catalytic converter thefts.

The suspects appear to be targeting:
- 2000s Hondas and Fords that are parked in shared apartment complex lots
- The incidents have all occurred during the night time hours

Your catalytic converter may have been stolen if you notice your vehicle is much louder than when you last drove it. If your catalytic converter has been removed, your vehicle will make a loud roaring sound that gets louder as you push the gas pedal. Your vehicle may also make a sputtering sound as you change speed, and you may notice it's not driving smoothly.

PREVENTION TIPS:
1) Park in well-lit areas of the parking lot
2) Engrave your VIN or license plate number into the converter
3) Have your catalytic converter welded to your vehicle's frame at a muffler shop
4) Purchase and install a catalytic converter protection device
