Vehicle crash closes Rohnert Park Expressway

On 4/23 at approximately  2:58 PM, The Rohnert Park Department Public Safety Communication center received multiple 911 calls regarding a vehicle accident involving a railroad crossing tower and a SUV.

Emergency crews arrived on scene within minutes to find a solo occupant in the SUV with serious injuries. He was transported to Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition. The driver has been identified as 21 year old Rohnert Park resident Damien Pheng.

Witnesses stated Pfeng was traveling east on the Rohnert Park Expressway when his vehicle began to drift to the right prior to hitting the crossing arm tower.  Additional witnesses stated they did not see brakelights prior to impact.   Based on the damage as well as displacement of rail road debris, it appears the vehicle was traveling over the posted speed limit.   The actual speed has not been determined at this time.  It is unknown if Pfeng was impaired at the time of the collision however that is still being investigated.

The roadway was closed for approximately 1.5 hours while fire crews cleared the vehicle and railroad debris. One lane is now open eastbound for traffic. Due to the railroad tower being out of service SMART Personnel will remain on scene to flag vehicles through the railroad crossing. Any detailed information regarding SMART service should be directed towards their PIO.
