Petaluma PD received a call from a resident who reported an unknown male had just parked a vehicle in the middle of the street and walked away. The resident provided the vehicle license plate which revealed it was reported stolen from San Rafael hours prior. As officers responded to the area, the resident provided updates describing the male as checking door handles on other vehicles, acting “strangely,” and that he was beginning to drive away again in the stolen vehicle.
Officers arrived and located the vehicle stopped at an intersection. The driver, identified as Whitney Dase, was detained without incident. A record check revealed he had an extensive criminal history and was on felony probation out of Contra Costa County. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and vehicle theft with prior convictions. He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail, and the undamaged vehicle was returned to its owner.
