Reckless driver crashes into building

On Monday, April 8, 2019 at about 6:30 p.m., the San Mateo Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving in the Sunnybrae neighborhood of San Mateo. The vehicle fled from the officer, who attempted to pursue, the vehicle accelerated away from the officer at high speed, and ultimately failed to stop at the stop sign for S Claremont Street at 16th Avenue. The vehicle drove directly into the apartment complex in the 400 block of E. 16th Ave.

Fortunately, no bystanders or officers were injured as a result of the driver’s reckless behavior. The vehicle collided into an apartment in the complex, which was vacant at the time of the accident. The driver was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition. Our partners at the California Highway Patrol are assisting us in the collision investigation as we continue to look into the suspect’s motive for fleeing from police.
