April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Central Marin Police will be out in our communities next week conducting a special traffic enforcement operation. On Wednesday, April 10th, our Traffic team will focus on distracted driving enforcement at various locations in Larkspur, Corte Madera, and San Anselmo.

Distracted driving is anything that that takes your eyes or mind off the road, or your hands off the steering wheel. Using your cell phone while driving is not only dangerous, but also illegal. In California you cannot use a cell phone or similar electronic communication device while holding it in your hand. You can only use it in a hands-free manner, such as speaker phone or voice commands, but never while holding it. And any driver under the age of 18 is prohibited from using a cell phone in any fashion.

We know that distraction leads to driver error and 7% of all drivers at any given time are using their phones while driving. Drivers talking on phones, whether hand-held or hands-free, still can miss seeing up to 50% of what is going on around them like: other drivers - pedestrians – bicyclists. Before you start your car, turn off your phone and Just Drive.

CMPA’s goal is to make our streets safe for everyone and to remind motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists to be alert, aware, and follow the rules of the road while driving, walking, or cycling. We are all responsible for traffic safety in our communities.
