John Clyde First Annual Memorial Stream Cleanup

We apologize for the previous outdated information that was sent in error, please view below for the correct John Clyde First Annual Memorial Stream Cleanup

Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has brought millions of people together to celebrate our world’s environment. The day has also focused our attention on environmental problems such as pollution, flooding and littering. To commemorate Earth Day in 2019, Franklin Township Environmental Commission has joined with New Brunswick Environmental Commission (NBEC), Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership (LRWP), The Watershed Institute (TWI), Friends of Mile Run Brook (FMRB) and the New Jersey AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador Program to host a stream cleanup event on Saturday, April 13th from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon.

We can’t do it without you! Over the years and with the help of hundreds of volunteers, we have removed over 15,000 pounds of garbage from our town since 2007. There are two major watersheds in the town: Millstone and Raritan. This year, we will be cleaning in highly populated area of Mile Run Brook that forms border between Franklin Township and New Brunswick. Volunteers can park their vehicles at the St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 285 Hamilton St, Somerset, NJ 08873. We will kick off the clean up from the intersection of Hamilton and Woodbridge Streets at 9:30 AM. Stream Clean-up coordinators will meet you there and get you started.

For more information contact Stan Jaracz, Franklin Environmental Commission member, [email protected] or Von Sully, AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador, [email protected] .

All supplies (gloves, garbage bags, pickers) will be provided. Light refreshments and water will be available, but in the spirit of sustainability, volunteers should bring their own reusable bottles.

Boys and Girls Clubs, Schools, Environmental Clubs, Businesses, Corporations and individuals, young and old, are invited to participate in this community event. Businesses are encouraged to provide monetary support, http://lowerraritanwatershed.org/support/. https://thewatershed.org/membership/

You may wonder why it is so important to keep our waterways clean. Streams, rivers and other water bodies make up the watershed where we all live. Watersheds are areas of land where runoff from rain and snow drains into a lake, stream, river or wetland. These watersheds are full of life. They provide habitat for fish, birds and wildlife. They are also a source of drinking water for homes and businesses. Our joint mission is to keep water clean, safe and healthy through conservation, advocacy, science and education. Visit LRWP at http://lowerraritanwatershed.org/ and TWI at https://thewatershed.org/ to learn what we are doing to protect water.
