It's the most common traffic conviction and driving behavior contributing to accidents in WI.
Speeding is one of the leading factors in accidents. Why do people speed? They are in a rush, they are not paying attention to their driving, they don’t think the law applies to them, they don’t think speeding is dangerous, or they think they won’t be caught for speeding. Whatever the reason, speeding increases your chances of being in a serious accident that causes excessive damage, injury or even death.
A driver who speeds has less time to react to the obstacle that has presented itself in the roadway and has increased the stopping distance required to avoid striking that obstacle. Two bad combinations when the obstacle may be a vehicle, an animal or a person. Speeding also increases the overall damage inflicted on the obstacle struck and increases the likelihood of death when hitting a person – a person struck at 30 mph has a 60% chance of survival versus a person struck at 40 mph who only has a 40% chance of survival. A mere 10 miles per hour has turned a bad situation worse.
City streets, unless posted otherwise, have a speed limit of 25 MPH. This is the law. Just because others may not be following the speed limit does not give other drivers “a free pass” to increase their speed to accommodate the flow of traffic. As a community, we all need to understand the importance of following the speed limit and do our part by obeying the speed limit. This community mindset will result in decreasing the probability of being in an accident due to speed and ensure our loved ones are not injured or even killed because of speeding. Join the effort – help reduce accidents!
