Newark Firefighters Rescue 6-Year Old Girl at South 12th Street Fire

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that members of the Newark Fire Division rescued a 6-year old girl while extinguishing a two-alarm fire on Saturday, March 16th, 2019.

Firefighters rescued the girl, who was trapped on the third floor of 46 S. 12th Street, using a ground ladder.

The child was treated at the scene by EMS. No other injuries have been reported.

After firefighters responded to the first alarm at 5:05 p.m., the incident was upgraded to a second alarm at 5:13 p.m. with some 65 firefighters responding.

The fire extended to two adjacent buildings at 46 and 50 South 12th Street. Each building is a three-story, multiple family residential structure.

The fire was considered under control at 5:50 p.m.

Three families, including six adults and one child, have been relocated by the Newark Fire Division and American Red Cross as a result of this incident.

The original building at 48 South 12th Street will be demolished.

Members of the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit are investigating the cause and origin of this fire.
