Winter Storm Warning until 12:00AM Thursday

A potent storm system taking shape over New Mexico will drag abundant moisture and warm air across the state today. Heavy wet snow will continue falling above 9,500 feet today with even a few thunderstorms possible. Much colder air will arrive from the west tonight and turn rain to snow in the lower elevations through Wednesday morning. A burst of heavy snow and wind is likely for much of northern and western New Mexico Wednesday morning through Wednesday afternoon. Snow is expected to taper off over western New Mexico Wednesday evening however snow may continue over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains through Thursday.

* WHAT...Heavy snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches below 7,500 feet and 6 to 12 inches above 7,500 feet. Areas above 9,500 feet may pick up as much as 20 inches. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph.

* WHERE...West Slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains, East Slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Upper Rio Grande Valley.

* WHEN...From midnight tonight to midnight MDT Wednesday night.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The combination of heavy snow and blowing snow will lead to low visibility. Travel could be very difficult to impossible.

* AFFECTED AREAS: EAST SLOPES SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS ... WEST SLOPES SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS ... UPPER RIO GRANDE VALLEY
