Today, Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla announced the City of Hoboken was awarded a grant by the State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to purchase, install and maintain up to 14 electric vehicle charging stations. The grant awards Hoboken up to $70,000 to install the charging stations across the City, including City owned garages and public locations.
“We want to make it easier for residents to own electric vehicles, which help reduce air pollution and emissions from traditional cars and improve our local environment,” said Mayor Bhalla. “This award for electric charging stations is the latest example of Hoboken’s commitment to pursuing green initiatives as a part of our Climate Action Plan, and I thank Governor Murphy and the State DEP for their partnership.”
The 14 single-port electric charging stations will be installed in City parking garages, including Garage B and Midtown Garage, on Washington Street in front of City Hall, and in parking lots at the Public Works Garage and Hoboken Fire Headquarters. The charging stations at the Public Works Garage and at the Hoboken Fire Headquarters will allow the City to phase electric vehicles into its municipal fleet.
The City was awarded the grant for the electric vehicle charging stations through the State’s Pay$ to Plug In – New Jersey’s Electric Vehicle Charging Grant Program. The electric charging stations are anticipated to be installed in the allocated locations later this year, with details for public use to be announced in the coming months.
Mayor Bhalla announced the framework of Hoboken’s Climate Action Plan in January, with the goal of Hoboken becoming carbon neutral by 2050, exceeding the Paris Agreement. Mayor Bhalla recently announced Hoboken will become one of the first municipalities in New Jersey to begin purchasing 100% renewable electricity for municipal operations, beginning in April, 2019.
