Social Media and Community Involvement Solves Hit and Run

On 2/7/19, at about 3:52 PM, Simi Valley Police officers responded to a felony Hit and Run investigation involving a vehicle vs. pedestrian in the area of Madera Rd. and Easy St. The pedestrian had only minor injuries, but the driver failed to render aid and fled the scene. The investigation yielded no witnesses who could identify the driver, but a video from a near by business showed that the suspect vehicle was a Dodge Dart, dark in color. Thanks to the help of social media, the video made it to the local news. On 2/27/19, footage of the incident was aired on the evening news and the suspect from the Hit and Run was watching. He recognized his vehicle and decided to turn himself in to the Simi Valley Police Dept. He was identified as Fermin Martin, 10/24/91 of Simi Valley. Martin was interviewed and subsequently placed under arrest for Felony Hit and Run.

Social media is a very valuable communication tool for the Simi Valley Police Department. Through our networks we are able to spread knowledge to protect the community, help catch suspects, request assistance in cases and share the efforts of our department. Without community involvement and social media, this case would not have been solved.
