Danville PD Warns of Phone Scams
We're getting into tax season, and this is a time of year that residents may see an influx of telephone calls from scammers looking for identifying information such as social security numbers.
The Danville Police Department warns residents to be wary of calls from individuals purporting to be from the IRS. A few helpful tips to watch for:
The IRS always contacts you by mail before any possible phone calls.
The IRS will not threaten to have police arrest your for unpaid taxes
You will not be asked for social security numbers or banking information in a call by the IRS
Never give in to demands to pay money immediately. Especially be wary if being asked to wire money or pay with a prepaid debit card
Don't trust the number/name showing up on CallerID. Scammers can spoof that information to fool the CallerID system.
What to do?
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS, request a name, badge number and a callback number. Then check the credentials by calling the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484. Suspicious email messages can be forwarded to [email protected].
This strategy can be employed for a variety of scams. If a person is claiming to be with a company or agency and you feel it may not be legitimate, simply ask for identifying information, and check it out with that company. It never hurts to ask, and always better to be safe than sorry.
Hope this helps!
