Join our "night vision." Here's tips on how to avoid accidents while driving at night.

It is reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that automobile fatalities triple at night.  Why is this?  Is one of the reasons due to the human eye not necessarily being at its best while driving at night – that is definitely one reason.  So, how do I become a better night driver and avoid an accident.

  • Headlights – make sure they are pointing forward evenly and are clean from grime.  Lights working properly provide the driver with the ability to see what’s ahead.  Balanced lights also don’t distract oncoming drivers.
  • Dimming your indoor dashboard lights and other accessories.  Do you necessarily need all the indoor lights?  These lights reflect off your dashboard and impact your eyes ability to adjust to the darkness ahead.  Dimming provides your “night” eyes a break.
  • Wear your prescription glasses or contacts if you have them.  You have these for a reason – wear them.  Plus, don’t necessarily fall for all the false “night time” driving glasses offers, some of the available products actually restrict the amount of light allowed into your eyes.
  • Keep an eye out for animal retina’s – yes, retina’s, your headlights will reflect off of an animals eyes, if you see these reflective dots, slow down.
  • Don’t stare at incoming headlights – pay attention to the oncoming vehicle but turning your gaze away will allow your eyes to adjust.  This is particularly annoying when someone doesn’t turn off their “brights” as they approach though a simple gaze away until they pass should avoid additional annoyance.  If you are being followed by someone who has their “brights” on, adjust your rear view mirror, many times the movement of the mirror reminds the driver behind they have their “brights” on.
  • Make sure your windows are clean.  Even though they may appear clean during the day, you may discover that they are smeared while driving at night.
  • Fog lights are helpful.  Fog lights are designed to light up the roadway below the fog and see objects on the roadway.  Though, ensure they are adjusted properly or they can cause problems with oncoming drivers.
  • Make sure your mirrors are clean.  Clean them and adjust them so you don’t have to stare into oncoming lights from behind or other.  Remember to utilize night or auto dim settings.
  • Finally, make sure you are ready to drive at night.  Being tired diminishes your ability to be alert and your eyes are getting a “raw deal”, your eyes are there to help – give them their best chance.
