Notable Cases

On Monday, 02-04-19 at 2:28 p.m., Officer Cordellos was dispatched to the True Religion store at the Serramonte Shopping Center on a report of a subject who attempted to steal a pair of pants. The reporting party (the store manager) said he saw a female subject walk into the store with two other subjects. He said the subject stole a pair of pants and walked out of the store without paying for the pants. The reporting party said he ran out into the mall and told her to give back the pants. The reporting party said he got the pants back, but the subject threatened to “cut” him. Sgt. Begley and Officer Taylor advised they detained the subject, a 45-year old San Francisco resident. The subject was arrested for terrorist threats, shoplifting, possession of burglary tools, obstructing/resisting a peace officer and for a bench warrant.

On Tuesday, 02-05-19 at 2:12 p.m., Officer Cabatic and Officer Farrar were dispatched to the area of John Daly Boulevard and Poncetta Drive on a report of a man with a gun. The dispatcher advised that the reporting party said a subject pointed a silver handgun at him following a traffic altercation. The reporting party/victim gave a description of the vehicle involved in the altercation, and Sgt. Begley and Lt. Mussman observed the vehicle nearby and conducted a traffic enforcement stop. The victim, a 23-year old San Francisco resident, said he was driving to work from San Francisco and was “cut off” by a subject two times. The victim said the subject then got behind him and continued to follow him, speeding up and braking suddenly. The victim said he saw the subject point a silver handgun at his vehicle. The victim said when they got to the intersection of John Daly Boulevard and Lake Merced Boulevard, the driver exited his vehicle, walked up to the victim’s door and opened it. The victim said the subject tried to hit him several times with a closed fist. The victim said he got out of the vehicle and told the subject he was going to call the police. The subject got back into his vehicle and left the area. Officer Farrar drove the victim to where the suspect was detained so the victim could determine whether the subject stopped was indeed the same subject who was involved in the altercation. The victim positively identified the subject. Officer Cabatic found a gun in a backpack in the subject’s vehicle. Officers then placed the subject, a 50-year old San Francisco resident, under arrest for being a felon in possession of a firearm, assault with a firearm on a person, and for possessing/owning ammunition by a prohibited person.

On Wednesday, 02-06-19 at 11:13 a.m., Officer Ortiz was dispatched to Westmoor High School on a report of a student in possession of a knife. The 14-year old student had a knife with a 4” blade in his possession. The student was released to his father, and this case will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office.

On Friday, 02-08-19 at approximately 11:01 p.m., a 24-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated, causing bodily injury, felony hit and run, and for driving with a suspended license after he fled the scene of a crash at Southgate Avenue and 87th Street.

On Saturday, 02-09-19 at 7:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Ross Dress for Less store at the Westlake Shopping Center on a report of three subjects fighting. One of the subjects was a loss prevention officer. The victim said he was working when one of his co-workers told him about a suspicious male customer who walked in with a backpack and went to the men’s department. The loss prevention officer said the subject was pushing a cart of items, and he noticed the subject had bulging in the back of his pants which he did not have before he entered the store. The loss prevention officer said the subject left the store and triggered the sensors that were left on the clothing. The loss prevention officer tried to stop the subject outside of the store, and then a struggle between the subjects ensued. The subject bit the 20-year old loss prevention officer’s thumb, causing it to bleed. Officers arrested the subject, a 41-year old San Francisco resident, for robbery, felony battery, being a felon in possession of tear gas, possession of narcotics paraphernalia and for a misdemeanor warrant. The clothing the subject concealed on himself was returned to the store.

On Sunday 02-10-19 at 6:56 p.m., officers were dispatched to the unit block of Longview Drive on a report of a female yelling “someone has a gun” outside of the residence. A male stepped out of the residence when officers arrived, and he explained that he had kicked out the female because she was going through his things and acting “weird”. The female, a 27-year old transient, displayed signs of being under the influence and was subsequently arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.


Robberies

There was one robbery during the past week.

On Saturday, 02-09-19 at 7:30 p.m., a 41-year old San Francisco resident was arrested for robbery and other charges. This occurred at the Ross Dress for Less store at Westlake Shopping Center after the subject fought with the loss prevention officer when he was confronted for leaving the store with concealed merchandise. Residential Burglaries

There was one residential burglary during the past week.

On Monday, 02-04-19 between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., an apartment on the 200 block of Coronado Avenue was burglarized by an unknown suspect who stole prescription medication and jewelry. This investigation is continuing.


Commercial Burglaries

There were five commercial burglaries during the past week.


On Monday, 02-04-19 at approximately 2:56 a.m., three unknown suspects used a key stolen from a lock box to enter a business on the 6400 block of Mission Street. The subjects stole a cash box, checks, movie tickets, unknown medical supplies and the lock box.

On Thursday, 02-07-19 at 11:51 a.m., two unknown females and two unknown males stole over $2,400 in merchandise from the Victoria’s Secret store. The subjects were last seen getting into a black Chevrolet Cruze. This investigation is continuing.

On Friday, 02-08-19 at approximately 4:50 a.m., unknown suspects stole keys from a lock box to the Shaking Crab restaurant on Southgate Avenue and took cash. This investigation is continuing.

On Saturday, 02-09-19 at approximately 4:34 a.m., unknown suspects used a key to the back door to enter the Broaster Chicken restaurant at the Westlake Shopping Center and stole cash and office equipment. This investigation is continuing.

Between Saturday, 02-09-19 at 10:20 p.m. and Sunday, 02-10-19 at 4:00 p.m., an unknown suspect forced entry to the back office and locked desk drawer at the Kukje Market and stole cash. This investigation is ongoing.


Vehicle Burglaries

There were 13 vehicle burglaries during the past week.

• Unit block of Crestwood Drive—a wallet containing identification, currency, and a debit card was taken from the glove compartment of a 2018 Toyota Camry. The method of entry is unknown. Occurred on 02-04-19 between 5:40 a.m. and 9:40 a.m. **On-line report made.
• Serramonte Shopping Center parking lot near Dave & Busters—a Lagerfeld purse containing an iPhone XS, Dior wallet, Irish passport and cosmetics and an Aldo bag containing clothing, cosmetics and hair products was taken from a 2011 GMC Terrain. The right rear window was smashed. Occurred on 02-05-19 between 8:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
• 2600 block of Geneva Avenue—a pair of Versace sunglasses was taken from a 2013 Maserati Quatroporte. The right front window was smashed. Occurred between 10:00 p.m. on 02-05-19 and 8:40 a.m. on 02-06-19.
• 2600 block of Geneva Avenue—miscellaneous personal belongings were taken from a 2018 Audi QS. The method of entry is unknown. Occurred between 9:00 p.m. on 02-05-19 and 8:00 a.m. on 02-06-19. **On-line report made.
• In N Out parking lot on Washington Street—a purse containing Japanese yen, cell phone battery, identification and a backpack containing a passport, identification, book and cosmetics were taken from a 2018 Ford Transit van. The left rear window was smashed. Occurred on 02-09-19 at 1:27 p.m.
• Parking lot of 225 Coronado Avenue—a toolbox containing tools was taken from a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The left front window was smashed. Occurred between 9:00 p.m. on 02-09-19 and 7:00 a.m. on 02-10-19.
• Serramonte Shopping Center parking lot near Macy’s—a backpack containing a AAA card was taken from a 2000 Toyota Camry. The front passenger window was smashed. Occurred on 02-10-19 at 5:48 p.m.
• Geneva Avenue/Allan Street—coins were taken from a 2014 Toyota Camry. The right rear window was smashed. Occurred between 9:30 p.m. on 02-10-19 and 6:30 a.m. on 02-11-19.
• 3000 block of Geneva Avenue—nothing was taken from a 2007 Toyota Matrix. The front passenger window was smashed. Occurred between 8:30 p.m. on 02-10-19 and 6:30 a.m. on 02-11-19.
• Geneva Avenue/Allan Street—a knife was taken from a 2012 Toyota Camry. The right rear window was smashed. Occurred between 9:30 p.m. on 02-10-19 and 6:30 a.m. on 02-11-19.
• 3000 block of Geneva Avenue —Coins and Adidas perfume was taken from a 2015 Toyota Prius. The front passenger window was smashed. Occurred between 10:30 p.m. on 02-10-19 and 8:53 a.m. on 02-11-19.
• Gated garage at 35 Hillcrest Drive—a Chinese harp was taken from a 2007 Honda Pilot. The right rear window was smashed. Occurred on 02-10-19 between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
• Home Depot parking lot—a backpack was taken from a 2008 Toyota Tacoma. The right rear window was smashed. Occurred on 02-10-19 between 5:45 p.m. and 5:50 p.m. **On-line report made.

Scams/Other

On Wednesday, 02-06-19, a 27-year old Daly City resident reported she was the victim of a fraud. The victim explained the day before at about 3:00 p.m., she received a phone call from a man who said he was a police officer with the City of Pasadena. The caller told the victim that there was a warrant for her arrest related to an abandoned rental vehicle with a large amount of drugs inside and that the drugs were associated with a drug ring out of Mexico. The caller told the victim that the vehicle was rented in her name, and they suspected her to be the victim of identity theft. The caller told the victim that in order for her to protect herself from any financial damages, she needed to immediately purchase as many Target gift cards as possible using her checking account and credit cards. The caller told the victim that they were working with the DA’s to clear up her warrant due to mistaken identity. The victim said over the period of two days, she purchased the Target gift cards and gave the numbers on the back of the cards to the caller. The victim purchased a total of $21,000 in Target gift cards, and she said she was assured by the caller that someone would be coming to her address with a check for $21,000 and a new social security number. That someone never came to the victim’s house.

Black History Month Celebration, Saturday February 16

Free Household Hazardous Waste Disposal—Saturday, March 9th

Do you have any household cleaning products, propane tanks, garden chemicals, paints, paint thinners, fluorescent lights, used motor oil and oil filters, batteries, fertilizers, pesticides you need to dispose? These products are often labeled as toxic, poisonous, combustible, corrosive, flammable or irritant. Daly City residents can safely dispose of these items free of charge at a special drop-off collection event on Saturday, March 9th. To participate, residents must schedule an appointment at San Mateo County’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program: www.smchealth.org/hhw or by calling (650) 363-4718 and selecting option 3. The exact location and directions will be provided after you make an appointment. There is a restriction of 10 gallons or 50 pounds per appointment based on transportation regulations. NO business waste. It is unlawful to dispose many types of common household waste into landfill-bound residential and commercial garbage receptacles.


Literacy Day, Saturday March 30

On Saturday, March 30, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Daly City Peninsula Partnership, Jefferson Elementary School District and Jefferson PTA will be hosting their 17th annual Free Family Literacy and Health Day for students from all schools throughout Daly City and Colma. This event will be held at Susan B. Anthony School, and they will be offering free books, free lunch, raffle prizes, entertainment and activities designed for a day of fun for the entire family. They are also seeking donations of the following items: cash or gift card donations toward the event, raffle prize items for youth or adults, food donations, bookmarks, pencils, pens, educational materials, and children’s books. Claim your Free Tree!

As part of the California initiative to reduce carbon and limit emissions, the City of Daly City is offering a free tree for you to plant either in your front yard or your back yard. There are four species available: Coast Live Oak, Strawberry Tree, Peppermint Willow and Water Gun. Please reserve your tree quickly, as there is a limited supply. The trees will be delivered in April, 2019.
