On 2/13/19 at about 10:35 p.m., Sunnyvale DPS patrol units responded to See’s Candy located at 1238 W. El Camino Real on a report of a suspicious subject urinating in public.
Patrol officers contacted the subject who had 2 warrants for his arrest out of San Luis Obispo County. The subject was arrested for the warrants and it was discovered that he was in possession of a small package containing an unknown substance that was suspected to be narcotics. The subject was transported to DPS Headquarters for processing.
A patrol officer was processing the unknown substance at headquarters when he was exposed to the substance and immediately had a medical emergency. He was quickly treated by officers on scene and County EMS and was transported to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation.
The officer was admitted for further evaluation and is in stable condition. Six other Public Safety Officers were also evaluated as a precaution to the exposure and have been released from the hospital.
The suspect informed officers on scene that the substance was fentanyl, however, this has not been confirmed and the substance will be sent to the Santa Clara County Crime Lab for testing.
Headquarters was evacuated until our HAZMAT team safely secured the substance and decontaminated the affected areas. The exposure was contained to DPS Headquarters and there is no threat to the community.
Police, fire and EMS services were not affected during this incident. The evacuation was lifted at about 7:00 a.m.
