High Wind Warning until 10:00PM Wednesday
A potent weather system will bring strong southwest winds of 40 to 50 mph with gusts of 60 mph or more to portions of eastern New Mexico, including the Sacramento Mountains. Strong winds will initially develop across the Sacramento Mountains and high plains of eastern New Mexico after sunrise then quickly expand across much of central and eastern New Mexico by noon. Peak wind speeds will occur during the mid afternoon before dissipating during the evening. Dangerous crosswinds will be experienced along southeast to northwest oriented highways along with reduced visibility in areas of blowing dust. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a High Wind Warning, which is in effect from 7 AM to 10 PM MST Wednesday. The High Wind Watch is no longer in effect.
* LOCATION...South Central Mountains, Central Highlands, Northeast Highlands, Harding, Eastern San Miguel, Guadalupe, Quay, Eastern Lincoln, and Southwest Chaves Counties.
* WINDS...Southwest 40 to 50 mph with gusts near 60 mph.
* TIMING...Strong winds will first begin over the South Central Mountains up to the Northeast Highlands by late morning, quickly expanding over the Eastern Plains by noon. The strongest winds will occur around 3 pm before diminishing in the evening.
* VISIBILITY...Locally reduced in areas of blowing dust.
* LOCAL IMPACTS...Lightweight and unsecured objects will be blown about or become airborne. Small trees and shrubs and weak structures will likely experience some degree of damage. Strong crosswinds will create hazardous driving conditions especially along southeast to northwest oriented highways and for westbound traffic along I-40.
