Snow Emergency

The City of Sun Prairie will be declaring a Snow Emergency.

Beginning at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2019 and continuing until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 a Snow Emergency will be declared.

A Snow Emergency means that there is no parking on ANY City street until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 or until the Snow Emergency has been canceled.

Vehicles parked on the street in violation of this ordinance can be ticketed ($50 fine) and may be towed.

The weather forecast is for snow to begin at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and continue until 3:00 p.m. Monday afternoon, with a total of 8 to 12 inches. Snow will be heavy at times, falling at over an inch an hour. 20 mile per hour winds and extreme cold will make clean up more difficult and will take longer than normal.

Snow Routes will be maintained as necessary Sunday overnight and a full plowing of the City is planned for the early morning hours, Monday. Snow routes will continue to be maintained throughout the day on Monday, with a second full plowing of the City beginning as soon as snow fall ends. Clean up of streets will need to continue throughout the day on Tuesday, therefore the snow emergency and no parking on City streets will continue until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Temperatures will be below zero on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with wind chills as low as 65 degrees below zero. With these low temperatures, salt will have minimal effect melting snow and ice. Wind chills this low can cause frost bite within 5 minutes.

With the extreme cold, sidewalk and crosswalks will take longer than normal with limitations put on time spent outside. We will clear as many as possible with covered machinery, but necessary hand shoveling will be limited through Thursday.

Thank you for your cooperation in removing cars from the streets to make plowing operations safe and efficient as possible for City crews.

Instructions:

Avoid travel if at all possible and remove all vehicles from City streets. Dangerously cold temperatures are paired with this weather event.
