High Wind Warning until 06:00PM Friday

A potent trough of low pressure will drop into New Mexico on Friday with a strong jet streak aloft and a deepening lee-side surface low accompanying. The strong pressure gradient that will take shape over New Mexico will lead to very strong winds, with the strongest winds generally across the higher terrain south of Interstate 40. Occasional gusts of 55 to 65 mph are forecast with possible wind damage to trees, utility poles, and roofs. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a High Wind Warning, which is in effect from 8 AM to 6 PM MST Friday. The High Wind Watch is no longer in effect.

* LOCATION...Southwest Mountains, Sandia/Manzano Mountains, Central Highlands, South Central Highlands, Upper Tularosa Valley, South Central Mountains, Guadalupe County, Quay County, Curry County, Roosevelt County, De Baca County, Chaves County Plains, Eastern Lincoln County, Southwest Chaves County.

* WINDS...Sustained from the northwest at 30 to 45 mph with occasional gusts of 55 to 65 mph.

* TIMING...Winds will quickly increase through the morning Friday, peaking in intensity through the afternoon. Winds will begin decreasing in speed early Friday evening.

* VISIBILITY...Areas of blowing dust may cause visibility reductions down to 3 miles in portions of the eastern plains. In addition, visibility may be reduced to less than one mile in blowing snow across the higher terrain of the central and southern mountains.

* LOCAL IMPACTS...Strong crosswinds will exist on southwest-to- northeast oriented roads. High profile vehicles will be exposed to dangerous driving conditions. Gusts to 65 mph may cause damage to vulnerable trees and structures.
