Advisory

Larceny of Packages in your area

There have been many reports of packages being stolen off porches in your area. This type of crime is a nationwide problem. There are some things you can do to lessen your risk of being a victim,

  • Do not let packages sit on your porch for long periods of time. Remove them as soon as possible. If you are not home at the time of delivery, this can be done by a trusted neighbor, friend or family member.
  • Typically, the packages that are taken are ones on the front porch and out in the open. Consider requesting packages to be delivered to an alternative location such as a back door or side door.
  • If you are expecting a package containing something of value, require a signature upon delivery or make sure it is delivered when someone is home to receive it.
  • Consider renting a PO box or requiring package pickup at the post office
  • Utilize delivery “lockers.” Amazon has two locker locations in the area (EMU campus, Wholefoods Market on Washtenaw). UPS has a locker at the corner of Clark Rd and Prospect.
  • Invest in a home surveillance system. The Sheriff’s Office has had some luck identifying suspects through doorbell style surveillance cameras.
  • Always report suspicious activity to police
