PRESS RELEASE - Officer Involved Incident, Update

The Santa Clara Police Department is continuing to investigate an officer involved incident inside the convenience store of the Rotten Robbie’s gas station, 3471 Lafayette Street. The officers involved in the incident were:

Officer Douglas Bell, 12 years’ experience
Officer Eric Janssen, 8 years’ experience
Officer Jerry Ogg, 6 years’ experience
Officer Kenneth Nagata, 2 years' experience

The officers have been put on routine paid administrative leave during the investigation.

The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office has identified the suspect as Shaun A. Kennedy. His date of birth is 2/14/63.

The Police Department’s investigation has revealed that Mr. Kennedy was upset over work and personal issues. During the incident, Mr. Kennedy was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun and a 9mm caliber semiautomatic pistol. He also had a substantial amount of ammunition on him. There were two employees and one customer inside Rotten Robbie’s gas station when Mr. Kennedy started shooting. The officers confronted the lone suspect and shot him. He died at the scene. There were no civilian or officer injuries. To date, the total rounds fired by Mr. Kennedy is undetermined.

A joint investigation is on-going involving the District Attorney’s Office.
