Yesterday, Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla, County Executive Tom DeGise, Councilmembers Michael Russo and Emily Jabbour, and Freeholder Anthony Romano celebrated the groundbreaking of the Madison Street Park project. Madison Street Park will be completely overhauled to install new playground and park equipment, improve park space, and add safety features.
“A major priority for my Administration is to continue with open space projects and upgrade our city parks, and I’m pleased that the Madison Street Park renovation will result in substantial quality of life improvements for local residents,” said Mayor Bhalla. “When completed, children in the surrounding area will have new playground equipment that provides for a safer place to play, learn and interact. Thank you to the many residents who provided critical feedback to make this project a reality.”
“The Hudson County Open Space Trust will fund nearly half of the cost for these much-needed improvements to Madison Street Park,” said County Executive Tom DeGise. “I want residents to know that the County remains one hundred percent committed to our long-held goal of aggressively supporting the expansion and improvement of parks and open space throughout Hoboken. My thanks to Freeholder Romano, Mayor Bhalla, the City Council, our County and the City’s planning and parks staff, and to the residents here for helping move this project forward.”
“Improving our local parks is an important priority for me on the Council, and I’m proud to have worked with the administration to fulfill another promise I made to my neighbors by upgrading and renovating the Madison Street Park,” said Councilman Michael Russo. “This project makes necessary safety improvements and improves the quality of recreation for all of our children. I invite all of Hoboken to join us for the official opening of the park later this spring.”
The Madison Street Park project will include brand new park equipment, including two new sections of playground equipment for children of different ages. It will also include an upgraded spray feature, new swing set, climbing net, new shade structure, additional benches and a new bathroom. The park’s new safety features will include new playground safety surface as well as added protective fencing.
The final design for the new Madison Street Park went through a public process initiated by City Hall, which included two public meetings and a public survey.
Hudson County allocated $500,000 through the County’s Open Space Trust Fund at Mayor Bhalla’s request to help fund the Madison Street Park project construction. The park is currently closed due to construction, and will reopen to the public in the spring of 2019.
