Advisory

Flood Warning until 09:30AM

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a

* Flood Warning for... Transylvania County in western North Carolina... Henderson County in western North Carolina...

* Until 930 AM EST Friday.

* At 328 AM EST, Doppler radar indicated a broad area of continued heavy rainfall across Transylvania and Henderson Counties, with rainfall rates around one-half to three-quarters of an inch per hour in the heaviest downpours. Rain gauges indicated that this additional rainfall was impacting locations that have received 2 to 3 inches of rain over the past 12 hours. This will create flooding along streams and creeks in the Warning area, with deep standing and running water in low spots and poor drainage areas.

* Flooding is developing along the French Broad River above Chestnut Street in Rosman. Flooding is also developing along Hannah Ford, Island Ford, and Green Roads between Rosman and Blantyre. Homes on East Main and Depot Streets in Rosman should monitor the river levels for possible flooding. Additional flooding will impact the Davidson River at Highway 276 north of Brevard and the Little River at Penrose. Flooding is developing around Hendersonville, with levels at Mud Creek possibly exceeding 8.5 feet this morning and threatening the area around the South Grove Street Bridge, South King Street, and Chadwick Avenue.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include... Hendersonville, Brevard, Mills River, Fletcher, Flat Rock, Etowah, Mountain Home, Laurel Park, Rosman and Lake Toxaway.

* AFFECTED AREAS: TRANSYLVANIA, NC ... HENDERSON, NC

Instructions:

Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to cross water-covered roadways, bridges, or low-level crossings. Only a few inches of rapidly flowing water can carry away your vehicle. It is not worth the risk. Please TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. The additional heavy rain will increase the risk of landslides, especially in areas where slides have occurred in the past. Be especially alert if you are near a stream, especially at the base of a mountain or in a cove. Watch for loose-moving soil and rocks or a sudden increase in streamflow. Leave the area quickly if this is observed. When driving along roads where the terrain is steep or rocky, watch and listen for falling rocks, mud, trees and other debris. Only when it is safe to do so, please report floodwaters or landslides flowing over roads or threatening property to the National Weather Service by calling toll-free, 1, 800, 2 6 7, 8 1 0 1, by posting on our Facebook page, or via Twitter using hashtag NWSGSP. Your message should describe the event and the specific location where it occurred, including roadways, nearby cross streets, stream names and other landmarks.
