BPD 100 mile Step Challenge

https://youtu.be/S-h6p3lM6dA
As the Holiday season comes to a close, we would like everyone to have a healthy start to the New Year.  We are challenging everyone in the community to a 100 mile step challenge over the month of January.  What better way to bring in the New Year than by encouraging you to move more!  After all, sitting is the new smoking.

If you think 100 miles seems really far, consider that a healthy step goal is 10,000 steps per day.  Though we all have different strides, 100 miles amounts to about 6,460 steps or 3.23 miles per day.  Throughout the day, the average person will normally walk more than that just doing their regular routine.

To participate in the challenge, we are asking you to make a small effort to track your daily mileage.  You can do this using a pocket pedometer—such as an Apple Watch, Fitbit or any other device that is capable of keeping track of your steps.

You can make this fun by challenging your family, neighbors, co-workers and friends to do the challenge with you.  If you are active and find that you already move more than the daily step guide, give yourself another goal.  See how quickly you can get to 100 miles, or double the number and see how many miles you can accrue during the month.  We will have a chart available at the front counter of the police department for you to track your progress, or you can print it from this link—(http://bit.ly/100mileStepChallenge).

So, starting January 1st, do little things that will add to your daily step count like:  take the stairs, park at the back of the parking lot, meet friends for a hike instead of lunch, drink more water, which will make you walk to the bathroom more often.  Find little ways to have fun with this.  Whatever you do, remember to warm up, stretch, and always walk in a safe areas.

On the last day of the challenge, Thursday, January 31st, you are all invited to join us in front of the Police Department (2100 Martin Luther King Jr Way) to walk the last 3.23 miles together.  At Noon, come to the front steps of the Police Department and walk with a member of the Police Department as we finish this challenge together.
