Automated License Plate Reader Helps Nab Car Thief
On Dec. 10th at approximately 9:30 PM, an officer from the Simi Valley Police Department was patrolling the area of Cochran St. and Tapo St. when the vehicle's ALPR (Automated License Plate Reader) indicated the license plate on the vehicle in front of him was stolen. The officer activated his emergency lights to initiate a t-stop and investigate further, but the vehicle fled. A short pursuit commenced and eventually terminated at the west end of Adam Rd.
The suspect and sole occupant quickly exited the vehicle and fled on foot across Tapo Canyon Rd. toward the Regal Shopping Center. After a short foot pursuit he was eventually caught and detained.
The investigation revealed that the vehicle was stolen out of Los Angeles. Inside the vehicle, numerous burglary tools and drug paraphernalia was recovered. The suspect, Richard Naranjo (11-10-72) was placed under arrest for 10851 VC (Vehicle Theft), 2800.2 VC,(Felony Evading a Peace Officer) 148 a PC (Resist or Delay a Peace Officer), 466 PC (Possession of Burglary Tools) and 11364 HS (Possession of drug paraphernalia). He was subsequently booked at the Ventura County Jail.
