Suspect(s):          Laura McDaniel, 22-year-old Santa Rosa resident

Incident Summary

A Petaluma PD officer was on patrol in the Petaluma downtown area when he observed an older VW Bug traveling at approximately 60 MPH on East Washington Street, which is a posted 25 MPH zone.  The officer attempted to catch up to the VW when it fail to negotiate a slight bend in the roadway at Copeland Street.  The VW jumped the sidewalk, drove through a chain link fence, and collided with a K-rail barrier protecting a billboard.  The VW came to rest on top of the barrier and sustained significant front-end damage.

Officers contacted the female driver, identified as Laura McDaniel, and her passenger.  McDaniel sustained various minor injuries, and her passenger was not injured.  McDaniel displayed signs of impairment and was eventually arrested for DUI.  Her blood alcohol concentration was found to be over twice the legal limit of .08%.  Due to her injuries she was issued a citation to appear and released.

Petaluma PD reminds people to drink responsibly and strongly encourages the use of public forms of transportation.  DUIs typically cost over $10,000.00, which is far more expensive than a taxi or ride-share fare, and driving privileges will be suspended by DMV.
