DATE/TIME: December 5, 2018 / 10:32 am

INCIDENT: PC664/459 - Attempt Burglary of a Residence
PC148(a)(1) - Resisting a Peace Officer

LOCATION: 34900 block of Yucaipa Boulevard, Yucaipa

SUSPECT: Derius Edwards, 20 years old, resident of Yucaipa

SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 10:32 a.m. deputies responded to reports of an adult male, wearing a black hoodie and carrying a black backpack, who was attempting to break into an apartment. As deputies responded, the suspect noticed that citizens were watching him, and he suddenly fled the area.

A deputy arrived on scene almost immediately after the call was broadcast, found the suspect and attempted to make contact with him on Avenue B. The suspect left his bicycle, ran through businesses and several yards in a residential neighborhood south of Yucaipa Boulevard. A sheriff's helicopter was patrolling in the area and quickly arrived at the call. The helicopter crew spotted the suspect as he fled through yards with deputies in foot pursuit. A deputy caught the suspect, Darius Edwards, as he ran south on California Street from Avenue B. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle with deputies. Neither he, nor deputies, were injured.

Edwards was found to be in possession of pepper spray and a stun gun when he was taken into custody. He discarded a realistic pellet gun as deputies initially attempted to contact him.

At the conclusion of the investigation, Edwards was arrested and booked into custody at West Valley Detention Center on charges of attempted burglary and resisting arrest. He was also found to have a misdemeanor warrant for his arrest. He is being held on $75,000 bail.
