Suspected Intoxicated Driver Strikes Cass County Patrol Vehicle

Sheriff Richard J. Behnke reports that on 11-17-18 at approximately 2230 hours Deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle being driven by Patrick McMeeken (31yrs of Dowagiac), for speeding on M51 near VanBuren St. in Cass County’s Wayne Twp. Deputies made contact with the driver and determined that the vehicle was stolen out of Hartford, MI. McMeeken was arrested for possession of the stolen vehicle, possession of meth, and a felon in possession of a firearm. While conducting the investigation, a Cass County Deputy was standing next to his patrol vehicle with the driver’s door open when an unrelated vehicle failed to move over for the emergency vehicle. This vehicle struck the driver’s door of the patrol vehicle with its mirror, missing the Cass County Deputy by inches. Pokagon Tribal Police, who were assisting Cass County Deputy’s, were able to pursue the vehicle and conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Spencer Mourning (47yrs of Dowagiac). Officers arrested Mourning for suspicion of operating under the influence, possession of open container, possession of marijuana, and leaving the scene of an accident. Both individuals were lodged at the Cass County Jail.
Sheriff Behnke reminds all motorists that the law requires all vehicles to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles.
