Advisory

Winter Storm Warning until 06:00PM Monday

A potent storm system will cross northern and eastern New Mexico with a few to several inches of snow late today through Monday. The heaviest snowfall will favor the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez mountains, as well as the I-40 corridor of eastern New Mexico. Accumulating snow will begin in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and adjacent northeast highlands with the arrival of a potent cold front this afternoon. Snow will then expand southward into northeastern and east central New Mexico this evening. Very cold temperatures combined with snow, blowing snow, and freezing fog will create hazardous travel through Monday morning. Snow will taper off late Monday morning across the plains while persisting through Monday afternoon in the northern mountains.

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 12 inches expected in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Locally higher amounts up to 20 inches are possible on east facing ridges and peaks. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches expected along the Interstate 25 corridor from Las Vegas to Raton.

* WHERE...Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Raton Ridge and Johnson Mesa, Far Northeast Highlands and Northeast Highlands.

* WHEN...From noon today to 6 PM MST Monday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel will become very difficult to impossible, including Interstate 25 and mountain passes. The combination of snow, blowing snow, and freezing fog may limit visibility below one quarter mile at times.

* AFFECTED AREAS: RATON RIDGE/JOHNSON MESA ... SOUTHERN SANGRE DE CRISTOS ABOVE 9500 FEET ... EAST SLOPES SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS ... NORTHERN SANGRE DE CRISTOS ABOVE 9500 FEET/RED RIVER ... FAR NORTHEAST HIGHLANDS ... WEST SLOPES SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS ... NORTHEAST HIGHLANDS
